Wireless Networking

Wireless networking (often just known as Wi-Fi) is a method of getting a broadband internet connection without the use of cables or wires. Wi-Fi allows you to connect several pieces of hardward from computers &Laptops to mobiles phones and Ipads, anywhere in the house, office, garage or garden without the need to install extra phone lines or cables. Millions of people are already connect to the internet using Wi-Fi, which is also known as 'wireless networking' or 'wireless fidelity'. Wi-Fi is widely setup and free to use in many cafés, airports and other public buildings. If you have seen someone at your local coffee shop surfing the internet on a laptop computer, they are generally using a Wi-Fi network.

How does Wi-Fi work?

Wi-Fi creates a local network in your home or office which is a little zone where computers can get broadband interne accesst. It uses radio waves, just like TV or mobile phones. You may sometimes hear this zone referred to as a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). A device called a wireless transmitter or wireless router, receives information from your internet provider (BT, Talk Talk, Virgin etc) via your broadband connection. The wireless router then converts the information into a radio signal and sends it to your wireless devices, laptops, computers & phones etc.

How do I set up Wi-Fi?

To create your own Wi-Fi zone, you will need a few pieces of wireless hardware:

  1. A Wireless Router, also known as a Wireless Access Point (WAP)
  2. A Wireless Enabled piece of Hardware (Laptop, Computer, Mobile Phone)

Many Internet Providers (BT, Talk Talk, Virgin) supply you with a Wireless Router when you sign up to their Broadband Packages. This will come 90% ready to just plug into your phone/cable socket and be ready for you to just attach your devices. Many of these router come configured with a security code, which only enables the people you want to access the internet have access. This then stops unwanted usage by your neighbours or people in the surrounding area from getting free internet.

Most modern hardware (laptops, Mobile Phones, Ipads etc) come with built in Wi-Fi adapters. If your equipment doesnt have it already built in, then you can purchase a USB Dongle, which will plug in to the side of your equipment and enable you to become Wirelss.
